Apple issues Flashback removal tool for 10.7 Lion systems not running Java
The Flashback OS X trojan continues to cast a rainy shadow over Mac owners' sense of security, and even though a fix has been released, this was only for what Apple considered "the most common variants." Users of Lion, who don't have Java installed, weren't included in that initial run, but there is a new removal tool just for them. So, if you're running 10.7 and never installed Oracle's virtual machine, make sure you point your browser at the source link below.

Google puts False Start SSL experiment down, nobody notices

Back in September of 2010 Google started experimenting with a new Chrome feature called False Start, which cut the latency of SSL handshakes by up to 30 percent. While the delay in forging a secure connection never seemed like a major concern for most, the pause (which could be several hundred milliseconds long) before a browser starts pulling in actual content was too much to swallow for Mountain View engineers. The tweak to SLL was a somewhat technical one that involved packaging data and instructions normally separated out -- reducing the number of round trips between a host and a client before content was pulled in. Unfortunately, False Start has proven incompatible with a number of sites, in particular those that rely on dedicated encryption hardware called SSL Terminators. Chrome used a blacklist to track unfriendly sites, but maintaining that repository proved more difficult than anticipated and became quite unwieldy. Despite reportedly working with over 99 percent of websites Adam Langley, a Google security researcher, has decided that False Start should be retired with version 20 of the company's browser. The change will likely go unnoticed by most users, but it's always a shame to see efforts to make the web as SPDY as possible fail.

How to Make a Long Term Financial Plan When Retiring | Credit ...

financial

Long term financial planning is becoming more and more important as the economy is trying to come out of a crisis. People are more concerned about how to plan for their financial future. Making a long term financial plan is not as difficult as some people believe it to be. There are actually some basic tips that need to be followed to make a good long term financial plan for retirement.

Calculating Savings

Calculating Savings (Photo credit: 401K)

Plan early

You can start your long term financial plan earlier on in your life. This is actually better than putting it off for later. You never know what your future financial conditions will be; so start now.

What is your current income level?

Start by understanding your current financial situation including your income, expenses, debt, etc. If you have a big debt in your name then you should focus on paying that off as soon as possible instead of focusing on a retirement plan. If you are unable to pay off your loans then your retirement plans will become worthless. So pay off all loans quickly so that you can start saving.

How much can you invest?

After all the debt considerations have been sorted out, try to figure out what percentage of your income can you invest towards your long term goals. This involves both short term and long term decisions.

Monitor the financial plan

Once you have set your long term financial plan, keep monitoring it from time to time so that you can make sure it is going on track. This way you can identify a problem when it is smaller and stop it from becoming bigger. There is computer software that will help you manage your financial plan and keep an eye on it.

Consider hiring a professional

If you are not sure what road to take with the investments of your long term financial plan, then hire a professional financial planner to guide you. It is better to pay for that and invest correctly rather than waste all of your life?s savings on the wrong investments. There are so many types of funds and schemes that you can invest in, but if you don?t have thorough knowledge of how they work it is better to consult a professional.

Contribute to your employer?s retirement plan

Make use of your employer?s retirement plan and contribute the necessary funds to it. That is what they are for, so why not make good use of them.

Reduce your expenses near retirement

As you come nearer to your retirement, reduce your expenses and live off a fixed income. Don?t spend more than you are earning and allocate your assets properly to increase your earnings if possible.

Allan has spent a lot of time reviewing retirement planning strategies and self managed super funds. When he is not blogging, he loves spending time with his family.

Evidence for Flowing Water on Mars Grows Stronger

Liquid remains the leading explanation for newly discovered streaks on Martian slopes

THE WOODLANDS, Tex.?Today's Mars is a frigid desert, a place where water?the key to life as we know it?has gone into hiding. Whatever water may have once existed on Mars in rivers, lakes or even oceans is now frozen into ice caps, locked up in hydrated minerals or buried in debris-coated glaciers.

But last year compelling evidence emerged that when conditions are right, salty brines may persist to this day in liquid form at midlatitude regions on Mars. Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona and his colleagues found tracks in high-resolution imagery that looked like liquid flowing downhill. The tracks appeared annually during the warmer Martian months on equator-facing slopes, extended downhill and then faded as temperatures dropped once again. One tantalizing interpretation was that the streaks were caused by briny water melting and seeping downhill through the soil.

At the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference being held here this week, the researchers provided an update on their search for and analysis of the mysterious features, which they call recurring slope lineae, or RSL. Not only have they more than doubled the count of known RSL but they have been unable to devise a good explanation that does not involve the presence of liquid water.

"No one has come up with alternative models that they believe," McEwen says. "Nor have we." Lujendra Ojha, an Arizona undergraduate student who has done much of the heavy lifting in identifying RSL in imagery from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, announced in a talk at the conference that he and his colleagues have now confirmed RSL in 15 locations, up from seven when the features were first announced in a 2011 Science paper. Probable RSL have been identified on 23 additional slopes, but they have not yet been shown to recur year after year. "There's more there that we're going to find," McEwen says.

Other phenomena that have pointed to liquid water on modern-day Mars have plausible explanations involving only dry processes, McEwen notes. Streaky slopes closer to the equator, for instance, do not seem to display the seasonality that would be expected of melting and could simply be tracks from boulders rolling downhill. "In all these cases, you can explain the observations without liquid water," McEwen comments. "You have to favor the nonwater models if you can make it work. For the RSL, we can't make it work."

Support for the liquid-water explanation is coming from studies of arid, frigid regions here on Earth. In another talk at the conference, Joe Levy of Oregon State University compared RSL to similar-looking features caused by saline groundwater seeping downhill through the soil in Taylor Valley in Antarctica. Using satellite observations of Antarctic water tracks, Levy and a colleague found that they could estimate the soil's permeability from orbit by measuring how the tracks propagated downhill. And that estimate agreed reasonably well with the actual soil properties, which Levy and his colleagues have measured in field studies. "For flowing water features that darken the surface, it turns out you can do hydrogeology from orbit, which sure beats hiking," Levy said.

Applying the same calculations to Mars, he concluded that the RSL could be explained by brines if the slopes had the permeability of sand or silt. That matches the kind of soil expected to prevail at the sandy RSL sites. In other words, whatever is moving down the Martian slopes behaves as liquid would in that environment. "The RSL and the [Antarctic] water tracks are both flowing like water through sediment," Levy said. "If it moves like water, it may very well be water."

Snip Decisions | Box Office India : India's premier film trade magazine

Gory fight scenes, breath taking special effects or just plain mushy love songs? Every film scene requires a good editor. But it?s no longer the dark editing rooms that these film-tailors are restricted to.With more and more films being shot on digital cameras, editors are now stepping out on to the sets to make creative cuts.

While earlier, in the ?90s, editing on the sets was used extensively while making ad films, this trend is slowly catching the attention of Hindi filmmakers too.

The benefits of this are two-fold. While it saves a lot of time and reduces costs for filmmakers, editors can actually visualise what a scene will look like on location and how it would eventually translate onto the screen. Likewise, directors get to witness how a scene shot on location would look on screen and hence make the necessary changes on the sets itself.

A lot of Hindi film editors like Shirish Kunder, Chandan Arora, Namrata Rao and Kuldeep Mehan have used this technique in their films ? Main Hoon Na, Company, Ishqiya and Haunted respectively. And with time, more films?like Abhishek Kapoor?s Amdavad, Rakesh Roshan?s Krrish 3, Raaz 3 and Remo D?Souza?s Any Body Can Dance (ABCD) are all being shot with the edit-on-set technique.

Asif Ali Shaikh, editor of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, says, ?Editors are no longer just technicians. Their role is now that of avisualiser. Sometimes, especially when the shoot is on at an outdoor location, where the lighting tends to play hide and-seek, we have to be present on the sets to make sure a scene looks fine post the edit.?

He adds, ?If there are any discrepancies in the shot, having the editor on the sets really helps as we can do away with the errors or tell the director if a bad shot can be rectified later in post-production.?

Earlier, only the cameraman was able to see through his camera?s view finder and tell the director what a shot would look like on screen. The director had no other option but to take the editor?s word for it.Then came a phase when editors began using video-assist to show directors what a scene looked like before the edit. It is still sometimes used and is a system used in filmmaking, which allows the filmmakers to view a video version of a take immediately after it is filmed. A wire is attached to the camera, which translates the shot on to a small monitor, almost like a tiny TV screen.

This technology was used for quite some time while films were being shot on35 mm. It was mainly to give the director a rough idea of what a shot looked like.It didn?t however point out the qualityof lighting or the colour gradation. But with new cameras like the RED and Arri, editing-on-the-sets have become far easier.

Editor Chandan Arora says, ?Edit-on the?sets is a technique that helps a filmmaker when a lot of special effects are used or a lot of precision is required fora shot. Since most films these days are being shot in the digital format, editing is becoming more advanced and easier.?

According to editor Kuldip Mehan, this technology has been borrowed from Hollywood, where there is a line producer always present on the sets. ?Editing is usually done on two machines, the first pro cut or FCP and Avid. There was a?huge demand for FCP as it was cheaper compared to Avid and could be used on a MAC machine. But now even the cost of Avid has come down, making both a favourite among editors.?

Mehan specialises in 3D filmsand has worked on films like Haunted. He is now working on both Raaz 3 and Dangerous Ishq, which are both being shot in 3D.

He says, ?It is easier to edit a film which is shot in 3D rather than a 2D film which is converted to 3D as the final output in both can vary drastically. Edit-on-the-sets is thus very helpful for films which are shotin stereoscopic 3D as it saves both, time and the cost.?

However, while some editors are gung ho about filmmakers going digital and using edit-on-the-sets extensively, others like Namrata Rao are more inclined to old school ways of editing post shooting. She used edit-on-the sets for the films Ishqiya and also during Kahaani.

?Editors should be kept away from theshoot to be able to edit the film more objectively.I know edit-on-the-sets is easy and convenient but I feel it tampers with the editor?s creativity.?
